A masterly performance occurs at the intersection of control and freedom.
My focus is on assisting the actor in gaining clarity on what to do to tell the story brilliantly, while cultivating their freedom to respond to what emerges in the moment with undiluted vitality.
APPROACH
The Story and The Zone
I find nothing more exhilarating than witnessing moments of true spontaneity during a performance. It’s a coordination of mastery and freedom when a performer exerts control over the story, while remaining free to perceive and respond to whatever is uncovered in the moment.
The spontaneous experience is often described as flow, being in the moment or being in the zone. Most performers seek out this exhilarating state, where self-consciousness is replaced by a deep sense of knowing. Without an understanding of what is involved and which factors are at play to “get there”, it can feel like a magical operation, leaving the performer to play a game of chance.
Whether directing, coaching or teaching, my approach is based on a comprehensive theoretical knowledge of the anatomy of spontaneity and the factors involved in facilitating this immersive state. Alongside an extensive know-how of effective storytelling, my focus is to secure a masterly performance, while fostering the actor’s access to their flow state as they discover their true and ever-expanding nature.
ABOUT ME
I have extensive performance experience, beginning with an early start as a ballet dancer with The Danish Ballet Theater and The Royal Danish Ballet.
I trained as an actor in both New York and London. Since moving to New York in 1999, I’ve cut my teeth in all genres of NYC theater, with a particular soft spot for performing and creating comedic material.
In order to develop a cohesive and concise approach to the actor’s work, I have found it imperative to look outside the field of acting.
I have gained a comprehensive, theoretical understanding of the anatomy of spontaneity and of the psychological factors involved when a performer is spontaneously processing.
I hold an MA degree in Professional Education from Aarhus and Copenhagen University, where I researched the relationship between instructions and spontaneity in the rehearsal process.
In a theoretical cross-field of psychology and existential philosophy, I studied the concept of spontaneity, flow state, peak performance and authentic freedom.
During my course of study, I developed a theoretical underpinning to the actor’s work, defining the anatomy of spontaneity and identifying the factors that foster peak performance.
Since 2014, I’ve been a faculty member of the award-winning theater company and school, The Barrow Group in New York. Additionally, I teach Master classes, workshops for actors and directors and work as a private coach in New York and Copenhagen.
